Pottery Throwing Workshops

Throwing pottery on a wheel is a captivating art form that beckons both beginners and experienced potters alike. At Rui Ceramics, we cater to the needs of all skill levels, including regular students who return to our studio to expand their repertoire of throwing techniques. With a total of four wheels available, we provide a diverse range of options to suit your preferences and allow you to explore different throwing styles.

Our wheel collection includes three distinct types, each offering a unique experience. You can try your hand at the classic Leach kick wheel, an embodiment of tradition and craftsmanship that has stood the test of time. For those seeking a modern touch, we proudly feature two brand new Japanese Shimpo direct drive Whisper wheels, renowned for their precision and smooth operation. These state-of-the-art wheels embody the perfect blend of technology and tradition, offering an exceptional throwing experience.

Throwing pottery is a skill that requires time and dedication to master. Every potter develops their own distinctive style of throwing, honing their techniques and refining their processes over years of practice. It is this individuality that breathes life into each creation, infusing it with the artist’s personal touch and character. As you embark on your journey of throwing, you’ll discover the joy of self-expression and the satisfaction that comes with seeing your visions take shape.

"If you are looking for fun things to do in Auckland, highly recommend you check out Rui Ceramics! I booked a 2-hr pottery workshop with Emma for my husband and our neighbour couple and we had so much fun. Emma is so patient and talented. Instead of jumping straight into things, she provides guidance based on our level of experience. Emma is also super friendly and hilarious, we got comfortable right away. Throwing Techniques

No experience needed. Have a go session is the perfect start to your pottery journey. Throwing classes can be combined with hand-building to finish your pieces. You will make 2 to 3 pieces in the first class!

Once you’ve gained confidence in throwing cylinders, our classes will guide you through the next crucial steps: trimming and handle pulling. Trimming involves refining the shape and form of your thrown piece, adding those delicate finishing touches. It’s akin to sculpting, where you carefully carve away excess clay to achieve the desired aesthetic.

Throwing classes are available at all skill levels.
